NGUNYUMU PRIMARY SCHOOL (KOROGOCHO) BIO-DIGESTER CONSTRUCTION

“I only feel angry when I see waste. When I see people throwing away things we could use.” —Mother Teresa. Well, Ngunyumu primary school will soon be added to the good books of mother
Teresa if only she could attest to it. This is so, thanks to the sponsorship of World Vision International, Kenya through the partnership of Umande Trust to build a bio-digester in the school compound. The project was initiated since 2007 and the actual follow up construction work commenced four weeks ago with full construction and supervision from Umande Trust.
The bio-digester essentially seeks to ensure controlled Waste management around the school compound and this will eventually lead to having a better environment for the school and the local community.

It all started out with awareness about the project to the teachers, students and parents who readily embraced the initiative and are eagerly awaiting the completion of the whole project. Umande Trust also took the time to train the teachers on the procedure and process of building the bio-digester and the benefits. Some of the long-term benefits the school looks forward to enjoy from the bio-digester are, saving on the cost of buying firewood, learning experience for students, clean fuel for cooking, time, minimized odor and ensuring a clean and friendly environment. Short term benefits would be employment opportunities for people from the community who are to provide skilled labor for constructing the bio-digester.

 The project is still in progress and is expected to be completed in a few weeks’ time.
Once again Umande Trust adds to its list of beneficiaries Ngunyumu primary as it continues to improve the lives of communities and being a champion for controlled waste management and ensuring communities enjoy a clean environment.

Bio-gas lighting at Kayaba Ushirika wa Usafi na Maendeleo (Kuum B); Mukuru Settlement

  KUUM B Biocentre   Household air pollution is high due to burning of traditional fuels (kerosene and  charcoal) for cooking and lighting having adverse health impacts.  Use of these fuels produces high levels of smoke around the home with health-damaging pollutants.  These pollutants can lead to a wide range of child and adult diseases like  acute and chronic respiratory conditions (e.g. pneumonia), lung cancer, stroke and cataract. Residents in the informal settlement are the ones mostly affected by these conditions. Umande Trust through funding from Wimma Liikuttaa has been able  to maximize on the bio gas utilization from the KUUM B bio centre by installing 4, one burner stoves and biogas lamps in the four rental rooms. Voices of the Caretakers: Joseph

Upon entering the Starra Bio Centre, one would assume that this centre is just the same as all of the others neighboring it in Kibera. But once you walk past the circular centre itself, you are greeted by a large tent filled with plants, a greenhouse. This is where Joseph has worked for the past two years, and like his coworkers at other centres, Joseph spends most of his day cleaning and collecting pay. But he also has an extra job, tending to the greenhouse, planting, sowing, and harvesting the tomatoes and green peppers they sell there. Joseph enjoys earnings  living this way and says that it is a much fairer job than his previous one as a servant. He also says there are many challenges to his job. He often has to deal with abusive customers who refuse to pay after using the bio centre. Joseph says that he does not want to fight these thugs and often has to let them go without paying.
