Global Handwashing Day 2016

Yesterday, October 15th, schools and organizations in various countries around the world celebrated Global Handwashing Day.  This campaign is dedicated to increasing awareness of the importance of proper hand washing with soap and other basic hygiene practices.  This past week, Umande Trust traveled to a Bridge Academy school within Mukuru  to participate in a Global Handwashing Day celebration and the opening of a new Biocenter within the community.  The afternoon was filled with games, songs, and educational activities to teach the children about the proper way to wash their hands and at what times one should wash their hands.

After our celebration at the school, we turned the corner to take part in a ceremony for the opening of the first stage of a new biocenter, equipped with toilets and handwashing stations for men and women, and the service can be paid for through Mpesa.  Prominent members of the community and organizations that helped make the construction of this new biocenter possible were in attendance, with different community leaders making speeches regarding the progress that has been made.
